I first met Rana and the delights of Doli Guest House in March 2009. I have now visited and stayed three times, the last being a fabulous month in one of the self-contained "Swiss Cottages" during October 2011.
Its one thing to be in such a heavenly place (as is the Banjor Valley) with its beautiful nature and rich culture. But the thing that really makes it is Rana and his team. Rana is a warm and engaging host and importantly has truly great values around friendship, fairness, and protection of the environment. He is a big player in the local efforts to protect the valley's nature and wildlife. He is also so knowlegable about the area and can advise on all manner of things from walks you can do alone (mind you I took off once without good advice and got lost for a day but that's another story!!! All good in the end and a great adventure); to organising tours and assisted treks for as many days as you desire - into the Great Himalayan National Park and beyond!
Rana comes from the village high above Jibhi where members of his family still reside and this family is part of the local nobility.
I am going back to Jibhi (and more than just one more time) and have recommended others to go. My only misgiving about saying all this is that the place might get just too popular and the magic may then be diminished. But I think that as long as Rana is running things, that's unlikely, and his sons Gudu and Narendra are equally lovely people to deal with.
